From Cosmetic Marketing to World-Famous Carnival

In 1996, scientific studies demonstrated that the expansive mud flats around Boryeong were extraordinarily rich in natural minerals, bentonite, and germanium, rivaling the dermatological qualities of Dead Sea mud. To market their newly developed cosmetic skincare line, the city organized the first Boryeong Mud Festival in 1998.

What began as an experimental promotional campaign quickly blew up into one of South Korea's most attended international summer festivals. Today, millions travel south from Seoul to immerse themselves in giant mud vats, slip down colossal pneumatic slides, and participate in mud wrestling tourneys.

Key Zones & Main Attractions

  • The Giant Mud Bath: A massive open-air arena where hundreds of participants are coated with liquid mineral mud before joining team challenges.
  • The Mud Prison: Anyone caught clean and un-muddied is playfully herded into an iron cage where mud wardens throw buckets of slurry over them.
  • Color Mud Body Painting: Specialized booths offering colored mud made with natural cosmetic pigments for full-body tribal art.
  • Nighttime Beach EDM Rave: High-powered concerts featuring K-pop icons, fireworks, and water cannons lighting up the coastal shoreline.
