The Spontaneous 1945 Street Brawl
Unlike ancient religious celebrations, La Tomatina began by complete accident in 1945 during a parade of Gigantes y Cabezudos (giants and big-heads). A group of rowdy local youngsters wanted to join the procession and knocked over a participant, who became enraged and began hitting everything in sight. Right next to the brawl was a vegetable market stall. Spectators grabbed tomatoes from the carts and threw them until police broke up the melee.
The following year, the town youth repeated the fight intentionally, bringing their own tomatoes from home. Though banned repeatedly by the Francoist regime throughout the 1950s as a civic nuisance, the festival survived due to popular defiance—culminating in the famous 1957 "Tomato Burial" funeral protest where residents carried a giant tomato in a coffin accompanied by a somber marching band. Recognizing its unstoppable momentum, the town council embraced it as an official festival in 1959.
The Ritual: The Palo Jabón & The Water Cannon
The chaos doesn’t start right away. At roughly 10:00 AM on the day of the event, thousands gather in the narrow Calle Cid to witness the Palo Jabón: a two-story wooden pole slathered in thick pork lard, topped with a Spanish cured ham (jamón). Daredevils climb over human pyramids to claim the prized leg of ham.
The moment the ham is dislodged (or when 11:00 AM strikes), a starter water cannon sounds from the town hall. Six dump trucks enter the plaza carrying 150 metric tons of overripe, soft paste tomatoes from Extremadura. For exactly 60 minutes, total anarchic combat ensues until the final second cannon blast signals an immediate cease-fire.
Official Rules of Engagement
- Squash Before Throwing: You must crush the tomato in your palm before throwing to prevent severe bruising and impact injuries.
- No Hard Projectiles: Only tomatoes are allowed; bottles, cans, and cameras mounted on heavy selfie sticks are strictly forbidden.
- Do Not Rip Clothing: Tearing another participant's shirt was an old rogue habit that is now penalized with immediate expulsion.
- Respect the Final Blast: The second siren means you drop all tomatoes instantly. Anyone throwing after the whistle faces local police intervention.
